It's official, or about as official as the Softball World can get.
The Owen Sound Brick Brothers Volkswagen Junior Selects have been informed, along with Napanee, that neither center will get the 2010 Canadian Junior Men's Fastball Championship Tournament.
While no one will say for certain, it's understood the 2010 event will be " out of province " and to the best of my understanding, that means the Championship Tournament will be August 1st to the 8th in Nova Scotia.
This will come as a blow to the Owen Sound group who believed they followed the Softball Canada rules to the letter of the law, and truly believe they should be the host club and the host city for a third consecutive year.
From a neutral standpoint, I understand Softball Canada's decision to move the event around.
I'd think for a National Sporting body they'd want as much competition to host one of their marquee tournaments as the Memorial Cup gets when Junior Hockey rotates their championship.
Furthermore, I'd almost bet Softball Canada when telling Owen Sound stressed that there has been nothing out of order over the last two years and perhaps will be receptive to an Owen Sound bid as early as the 2011, or in February when the bids for the 2012 National Junior Championship Tournament open.
This decision won't sit well in certain quarters in the local softball community, but taking a step back, they really can't be disappointed in going from nothing in the winter of 2008 to being a perpetual contender to host a major National Tournament on a yearly basis.
