Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Through a sequence of events, or maybe through dumb luck, one of the most anticipated fights in the UFC is set for Saturday night on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
The Main Event for UFC 251 will be a welterweight championship bout between champion Kamaru Usman and challenger Jorge Masvidal.
This is the matchup everyone clamoured for; the title fight most observers felt Masvidal had earned....but it wasn't the matchup that was originally scheduled.
Masvidal with 48 tilts to his credit, gets the main event slot against Usman but only after top contender Gilbert Burns had to pull out of his scheduled shot at Usman's title after testing positive for COVID-19 late last week.
Masvidal, who claims to be the BMF champion ( whatever that could possibly mean ), was the opponent UFC originally targeted for Usman.
However, negotiations with Masvidal went south in a hurry and the fighter started a very public protest over fighter compensation in the UFC.
The UFC is a fight promotion and nobody promotes their product like the UFC.
Normally, a sterling matchup like Usman-Masvidal would have an extended time period to allow the UFC Production crew to ratchet the level of anticipation and excitement to a crescendo.
Ironically, with less than a week before the ref yells " let's get it on " there's almost no need to intensify the hype for the Usman-Masvidal Main Event on Fight Island this Saturday night.
