Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The 2020 harness racing season at Hanover Raceway is off to a terrific start.
The new 2 pm post time has accomplished many of the aspects it was designed to create, in fact, my guess is the response of the betting community has exceeded the initial projections.
Yes, it would be much better if spectators were at the track, and hopefully that day is on the horizon.
A month from now on Saturday August 1st, Hanover Raceway will conduct their annual " Dream of Glory " card.
For almost 20 years, the " Dream of Glory " day has been the highlight of the race season with the main event being the richest sporting event in our region.
Earlier this week, Hanover Raceway was granted a post time change by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for the " Dream of Glory " card.
Initially scheduled for 6:15 pm, the first post now on August 1st will be at 2 pm which is the new standard start time effective this year.
The good news at Hanover is plentiful;
There IS racing.
The 2 pm start time has been successful.
The betting public has been supportive.
& The signature race of the season at the track will be staged as scheduled on August 1st
The bad news ?
For almost 2 decades the " Dream of Glory " has concluded with a spectacular fireworks display.
That won't happen.
The Race Board at Hanover Raceway waited as long as they could, but with restrictions still in place pertaining to large congregations, it just wasn't feasible to hold a massive fireworks showcase, one that has attracted thousands on annual basis.
The 5th card of the Hanover Raceway season is Saturday at 2 pm.
