Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Stanley Cup victory by the Boston Bruins.
Every hockey fan has seen the Stanley Cup clinching goal by Boston defenceman Bobby Orr early in overtime.....
The goal by Orr certainly had dramatic flair and remains as one of the most iconic photos in NHL history.
The fashion in which the goal was scored, and the legendary lustre of the player who scored the clinching goal all but mask the fact the 1970 Stanley Cup Final wasn't very close; Boston sweeping St Louis and blowing them out in a couple of the game.
The other remarkable aspect to this sequence is the conjecture of what would have survived had Bobby Orr not scored the winner.
Let's say Wayne Carleton had scored the Game 4 clincher
Some years ago, we asked Wayne Carleton about that possibility........
Everybody remembers Bobby Orr scored the winner.
I remember Wayne Carleton was right there.
I'm Fred Wallace
