SMHLPA Hockey Pool

By Fred Wallace

The annual SMHLPA Hockey Pool goes tonight at Hisco's Resort and Gaming Palace here in Vegas North and tonight's pool leads nicely into the start of the National Hockey League season.

The NHL scheduler has come up with 4 games on opening night, stretching from East to West that hold appeal for every hockey fan in North America.

Is there any doubt the biggest game of the four is in Toronto tonight where the Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens ?

I doubt either team will have a player picked in the first round of Hisco's Draft tonight and projecting long term, I highly doubt that either of these teams will be mentioned in this segment come May as Stanley Cup contenders.

The Canadiens haven't won the Cup in 16 years, dating back to the fluke of 1993.

The Leafs haven't won the Cup........have they ever won it ?

Still, Montreal at Toronto on Opening Night.

The other matchups tonight are Vancouver-Calgary for Western Canadian fans, Washington-Boston in a match of two of the best teams in the East from last year and finally, San Jose-Colorado in the West.

Without giving too much away, I'm picking Grabovski, Gionta, Kessler, Phaneuf, Lucic, Green, Thornton and Hejduk if they're available tonight.

And if they are, I'll be holding down first place in the SMHL Pool by this time tomorrow.

I'm Fred Wallace
