Owen Sound Soccer Horizon

By Fred Wallace

It's been a glorious week, I'm sure, for the Owen Sound City Strikers Soccer Club.

With back to back victories on Saturday & Sunday last weekend, they captured the Division 1 Championship in the York Region Soccer League.

Sweetest of all for Owen Sound was upending Bradford Internationals in the final by 1-0 count with a substitute goaltender posting the shutout win over the regular season champion Internationals.

Not much was expected from the City Strikers from start to finish, but when the final whistle went, Owen Sound has the title.

With that championship comes the satisfaction of accomplishment.

And along for the ride are big questions about next year.

By winning Division 1, the City Strikers have gained the right to be elevated to the York Region Premier Division, the very same division in which Owen Sound Grey Motors won the regular season crown this year, before being bushwhacked by Collingwood in the post season.

Will Owen Sound, can Owen Sound, have two teams in the Premier Division ?

Or will Grey Motors accept an invitation of elevation themselves and move up to the Ontario Soccer League and share players with the Strikers through their respective seasons ?

There will be some interesting meetings on the soccer front in the days ahead.

I'm Fred Wallace
