Back To Back

By Fred Wallace

Back to Back.

In lacrosse it was a repeat weekend both for Owen Sound, and for Owen Sounders.

The biggest story inside the city boundaries is the repeat by the Owen Sound van Dolder Home Team Woodsmen.

The Woodies won their second straight Presidents Cup, winning the 2009 Canadian Senior Championship Saturday night at Six Nations.

Owen Sound beat the Tri City Bandits 11-5 to become the first team to win the Presidents Cup two years in a row since Fergus did it in the late 80's.

Actually, as people in Wellington County are quick to tell me, the Fergus Thistles were three time champs from 1986 through 1988, and obviously, a day or so from now, Owen Sound will put in motion their plans for 2010.

A 3peat ?

We can wait before we discuss that, and for the moment, to the team, the coaches, executives, sponsors and most of all, their fans, Congratulations to the Woodsmen.

Meanwhile, the Woodies long term future can also be seen as terrific.

While Owen Sound was winning the Presidents Cup, 4 young Owen Sounders were playing significant roles for Orangeville as they won the Canadian Junior A title for a second straight year.

Mat McLeod, Mat Eckert, Travis Gibbons & Adam Jones who was named as the Minto Cup MVP all played for the Northmen and who knows, could be Woodsmen of the future.
