A new video has been posted online by the non-profit Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump, as the group continues to gain momentum in its fight against a planned deep geological repository.
Spokesperson, Beverly Fernandez, tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the three-minute video was posted to YouTube last Friday and has been seen by thousands of people (if you’re interested in the video, click: bit.ly/1RDTNq9).
Fernandez says an email has gone to the Environment Minister with more than 92,000 signatures and 31,000 comments from those residents and concerned citizens opposed the DGR.
Stop the Great Lake Nuclear Dump is against the plan by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to build a deep geological repository to bury radioactive nuclear waste at the Bruce Power site on the shores of Lake Huron.
According to Fernandez, if printed, the petition to the Environment Minister would take 6,000 pages.
She says putting low to intermediate nuclear waste underground near the source of water for over 40-million Canadians and Americans makes no sense.
OPG says prehistoric rock on the Bruce Power site near Kincardine is the ideal location.
Over 200,000 cubic metres of the province’s low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste should go there, according to the utility.
Fernandez claims there are only three deep geological sites in the world where nuclear waste is buried, and all three have leaked.
She is hopeful that with opposition growing, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government in Ottawa will listen to the group’s concerns and stop the OPG plan.
Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is to decide on the dump sometime in the first six months of this year.
