The search for a man who has been missing from the Saugeen Shores area has ended, according to community members who were searching for him.
32 year old Brendan Martin had been last seen on January 18th in Southampton, and reported missing on the 20th.
Police had since been looking for him and asking people to check their outbuildings and properties for him in Saugeen First Nation, Saugeen Shores and Owen Sound.
Please Bring Me Home Co-founder Nick Oldrieve says Martin’s family conducted a search of their own for him on Sunday.
Oldrieve says his organization, which looks for missing people, had been leaving the search to police, but Martin’s family was planning a search anyway, So Please Bring Me Home decided to offer them support and helped to organize a search team of six of their people to assist Martin’s family.
They searched along the Saugeen River in Southampton. “A body was located and then was completely recovered and identified as being Brendan Martin,” says Oldrieve.
Oldrieve says Martin’s body was recovered from the water by the range light in Southampton. Martin’s family has also announced on Facebook that his body was recovered.
The investigation into his whereabouts which was being conducted by Saugeen Shores Police had been recently taken up by the OPP. Bayshore Broadcasting has reached out to OPP. They have not yet released a statement.
Saugeen Shores Police issued a statement Tuesday morning confirming human remains were discovered “in the area of the Southampton harbour” on Sunday.
“Members of the SSPS Criminal Investigations and Drug Unit, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, OPP USAR CBRNE Response Team (UCRT) and the OPP Forensic Identification Services assisted with the recovery,” Saugeen Shores Police say in a statement.
Town Police say a post-mortem will be conducted at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto.
