The skating trail at MacGregor Point Provincial Park is now open.
The park says in a notice, while the 400 metre skating trail is open, the park which is just south of Port Elgin becomes very busy.
The trail winds its way through a wooded area and it has lighting at night until 10 p.m.
The park recommends purchasing a two-hour vehicle permit for the Cedar Lane parking lot in advance to ensure your spot on the trail. You can buy those five days ahead of time on the Ontario Parks Reservation website. They say to stop at the park administration office to get your permits.
According to the park, the skating trail has about 30 floods of ice that sit atop a snow packed trail that’s driven over and over until it’s tamped down. Temperatures have to be below minus 10 for the skating trail to be successfully iced.
Meanwhile, the park says the skating rink, (a different ice pad) is not yet open. It takes about 20 layers of ice to be ready for use.
