Huron County council has approved a motion to call on the province to step up its healthcare funding.
The motion, submitted to council by Clerk Susan Cronin, says that municipalities across Ontario are facing a shortfall of provincial funding for public health.
It says that currently 82% of health units across the province are using property tax dollars to address the shortfall.
Previously, the agreement was that the Province of Ontario would fund 75%, while municipalities would contribute 25% in public health funding, and the province announced that municipalities would also receive an additional 1% increase per year in funding.
The motion argues that healthcare, and public health, are a provincial responsibility, and therefore additional programming should also be covered by the province.
Upon approval by council, the motion will also be shared with other municipalities through correspondence, as well as the Government of Ontario.
