South Bruce OPP is warning people to be on the look out for cryptocurrency scams after over $190,000 was lost since October.
Police say they have received several reports of residents falling victim to the scams, which involved people deciding to invest in cryptocurrency after seeing deceptive advertisements on social media.
“Victims funnel their money through illegitimate cryptocurrency investment firms, then are unable to retrieve their money,” says South Bruce OPP.
Police are urging caution around these types of investments and advise you do your research into various investment firms before sending any money, as well as consider talking with a financial institution or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to avoid falling victim.
Anyone with information on cryptocurrency scams are asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
