A revamp of a section of 1st Avenue East in Owen Sound — or Phase 2 of the Downtown River Precinct project — will wrap up in the spring.
Owen Sound’s Director of Public Works & Engineering Lara Widdifield told operations committee members at a Dec. 19 meeting “substantial completion” was achieved earlier in the month, but there are still a few items that need to be finished.
The second phase of the Downtown River Precinct project is a refresh of the 900 block of 1st Avenue East — from near the Sydenham condo building to 10th Street. A new riverside boardwalk, paths, a fresh street pave and landscaping work are among the improvements.
Council awarded a $1.73-million contract for the job earlier this year. An update memo to Owen Sound’s operations committee in December says the project is on budget, with $1.66-million spent to date.
A report to committee says the top layer of asphalt is laid, the boardwalk railing approaching completion and the installation of pavers and concrete essentially done.
Widdifield told operations committee members some of the items left to finish up in the spring are the refurbishment of a pedestrian crosswalk on 10th Street East, street sign installation, electrical modifications and some final grading and landscaping work.
“It’s all fairly minor work, but it’s not completed finished,” Widdifield explains. “So it will be finished off in the spring.”
