Cardboard recycling in Owen Sound is going to get more convenient next year.
Owen Sound’s Supervisor of Environmental Services Heidi Jennen told operations committee members at their Nov. 21 meeting curbside corrugated cardboard collection will be changing to correspond with bi-weekly recycling & garbage collection.
Currently in Owen Sound, garbage and recycling pick-up happens once every two weeks. But corrugated cardboard — such as pizza boxes and parcel boxes — is only collected monthly.
The service was due to change in Owen Sound by 2026 as part of the ongoing shift in Ontario’s blue box program to move curbside recycling responsibilities from municipalities to producers.
“So this year while staff was reviewing the waste management calendar with Miller Waste, they suggested that they implement (bi-weekly) collection of corrugated cardboard, instead of one Monday a month,” Jennen explains. “This will enhance service levels without any additional cost to the city.”
The plan is to implement the change in cardboard collection in January.
