Grey County council’s awarded a $2.4-million contract for a new paramedic base in Durham.
Domm Construction Limited will complete the job off Chester Street and Grey Road 4, adjacent to the site of the new West Grey Police building.
Some work is expected to get underway this fall, and the project is scheduled to be completed in about a year.
Grey County’s Paramedic Services Comprehensive Deployment Review 2023 to 2033 recommended the construction of a new paramedic base in Durham.
“This is the first of several bases recommended in that deployment review, in order to not only enhance response times and coverage, but also to (maintain) current response times based on projected growth and our changing demographics anticipated over the coming years,” Grey County Deputy CAO Randy Scherzer told councillors during Thursday’s committee of the whole meeting.
Scherzer says the new paramedic base will be built with a “solar ready” rooftop.
The county submitted applications for funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to support the purchase of solar panels to allow the building to become “fully net-zero.”
“If we get FCM funding, that would allow us to actually purchase the solar panels to install on the roof,” Scherzer explains.
