The Western Mustangs defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 9-6 at the Ontario University Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships in Kingston on Sunday.
The Mustangs, featuring former Owen Sound North Stars Reese Wilkins and Jamie Carr, were down 6-4 at the half before scoring five unanswered goals in the second half to capture the gold medal.
Picking up silver medals with the Gaels were former North Stars Kennedy Coughlin, Tara Meikle and Kenna McKee.
Western and Queen’s entered the championship as the top seeds in their respective divisions and both teams were undefeated at the event leading into the final. Western scored victories against the Guelph Gryphons, McMaster Marauders, and University of Toronto Varsity Blues while Queen’s defeated the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks, Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and Trent Excalibur.
Reese Wilkins and Tara Meikle were recognized as OUA All-Stars for the season.
Other former North Stars competing over three-day championships were Maddy Linklater (Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks), Cameryn Gateman (Trent Excalibur), Kirsten Sutter (Guelph Gryphons) and Rachel Wood (Brock Badgers).
