An Owen Sound firefighter won the gold at the recent regional FireFit event in Port Elgin.
Owen Sound Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says Joe Forbes won first place at the Lake Huron Regional Championship Aug. 26-27. He will now move on to the national competition.
“We are very pleased for Joe and his success at FireFit. We are proud of his dedication and what he has done to compete in his sport. We wish him well and success at nationals,” says Eagleson.
Eagleson says the FireFit course is often described as the toughest two minutes in sports which simulates all the duties a firefighter has to perform while competing for best time.
“Swinging an axe, to dragging a victim, to raising and lowering tools, and climbing stairs into a tower. The events are in succession on the course and it is the best time that wins and Joe had an absolutely remarkable run and beat out his fellow competitors,” says Eagleson.
He says Forbes’ final time was one minute and 22 seconds.
Eagleson says while being deemed a regional competition, the competitors came from across Ontario.
Should Forbes do well at nationals in Sarnia this September, he could move on to the international event in Miami, Florida later in the year.
