A new bridge installed in Saugeen Shores has been rededicated to a local family with deep roots in the community.
The town says Mayor Luke Charbonneau was joined by members of the McEwing family, as well as the MPP For Huron-Bruce and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson to rededicate the new McEwing bridge.
This two-lane, 34 metre concrete and steel structure spans Mill Creek along Sideroad 18 and 19, and replaced the old single-lane bridge constructed in 1930.
Douglas McEwing says the old bridge holds a lot of memories for them.
“As children, we often spent Saturdays dangling a fishing line off it or crossing it twice a day to go to school. I am grateful to the federal government, the province and the town for a job well done,” says McEwing.
The town says the majority of the bridge’s funding came from the Rural and Northern funding stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan. The federal and provincial governments contributed $1.63 million towards the project, covering 83 per cent, with the town covering the rest.
Charbonneau says, “this new bridge helps ensure that traffic will flow efficiently in Saugeen Township for decades to come.”
