Owen Sound has given out its annual volunteer awards.
Mayor Ian Boddy took time to recognize Elizabeth Charlton as the city’s 2022 Volunteer of the Year at Monday night’s council meeting; Sharon McKeachnie was named the Senior of the Year.
Charlton was nominated by East Ridge Community School for her significant contributions to the breakfast club program and other extra-curricular activities, such as book fairs, craft shows and the spring carnival.
“Mrs. Charlton has devoted her life to enriching the Owen Sound community,” Boddy says. “She has touched the lives of thousands of people on many levels from the basic human need of feeding the hungry to encouraging those around her. She has a cheery, welcoming manner that inspires and brings out the best in us all.”
The Senior of the Year, McKeachnie was nominated by Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse and Owen Sound Senior B Lacrosse for her work in the city’s sports community.
McKeachnie, an inductee into the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame, has held a number of positions including as the current president of minor lacrosse and a board member with the senior North Stars.
“I would like to thank my nominator, Sandy Barfoot, and all the wonderful people who sent letters of support for me, for this honour,” McKeachnie says. “And I’d like to thank my family, who have allowed me to do all this work over the years.”
