A $50,000 donation has been received by the Bruce County Public Library to help get their Bookmobile project on the road.
The donation came from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), which will assist the project in bringing books to where people are.
The library says seniors’ homes like Trillium Court in Kincardine, daycares, arenas, and sports fields are some of the locations the bookmobile could visit.
The project makes needs-based stops to reach underserved residents like newcomers or those facing a language or literacy barrier.
In addition, the bookmobile will also be able to present programming at community events, festivals, and other outdoor public gatherings.
Board Chair Luke Charbonneau says, “the board is extremely grateful for this generous donation from the NWMO. With the addition of these funds, we are close to achieving our goal of buying a bookmobile for the Bruce County Public Library. It is an exciting opportunity to broaden access to library programs, and we thank NWMO for helping to make it possible.”
NWMO Director of Site Selection in South Bruce Tareq Al-Zabet says it is their pleasure to support this important regional initiative that will have long-lasting benefits.
“Libraries continue to play a critical role in the community, and we thank the Bruce County Public Library for working tirelessly to connect residents and for improving accessibility of literacy services throughout the county,” says Al-Zabet.
The NWMO is a not-for-profit organization who is responsible for designing and implementing Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of nuclear fuel, and have shown themselves to be a supporter of the county library.
Previously the NWMO donated the funds needed to purchase one of the library’s 3D printers in the fall of 2020.
County Warden Janice Jackson says, “after another challenging year of branch closures and interrupted services, we are excited to be this much closer to launching the bookmobile and being able to safely bring services to undeserved communities in Bruce County.”
