Several local organizations are setting up holiday food drives to support feeding local residents.
Seasons Retirement Communities in Owen Sound is hosting its annual food drive. It kicked on Dec. 1 and runs to Dec. 14.
Residents, family members, staff, and volunteers are being invited to participate as Seasons is looking for non-perishable goods.
General Manager at Seasons Polly Kirstine says they are wholeheartedly committed to helping feed the hungry in the community.
“With the support of the Salvation Army Family Services and Food Bank, who we are so pleased to work with again, and the dedication of our residents, staff and volunteers, we strive to continue making a difference for those who are hungry in Owen Sound,” says Kirstine.
Since 2016, Seasons has donated over $180,000 in funds and food to local food banks, according to a release.
The Bruce County Public Library is also running its Food for Fines program at its 17 branches.
The drive is up and running until Dec. 12, as residents are able to clear some of their overdue fines in support of local food banks.
Every non-perishable food item donated will clear $2 from any library fines to a max of $10.
Director Brooke McLean says she feels hopeful about this year’s outcome.
“Covid-19 continues to affect our communities, and our local food banks are helping more people in need. With the support of our library members, this year’s Food for Fines campaign will be our most impactful yet,” says McLean.
The program was started by the library in 2015, and this year they are aiming to surpass their record of clearing $300 worth of fines and get more items for local food banks.
