A new ambulance entrance is now open at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre’s (SBGHC) Durham hospital.
The new entrance on the west side of the hospital is used by emergency medical services and funeral homes for access to the emergency department, according to a release.
This addition features a canopy and enclosed corridor leading to an entrance at the back of the emergency department.
The Durham Hospital Foundation was able to contribute to the majority of the costs by covering $185,000 through local fundraising and grants. An additional $28,000 was also made from the SBGHC for the engineering costs.
Before this opening, the main entrance to the emergency department was used by patients and visitors, as well as emergency services and funeral homes.
SBGHC President and CEO Michael Barrett says the ongoing support of the Durham Hospital Foundation made this project possible, and SBGHC appreciates the foundation’s significant contribution.
“Creating a second, separate entrance to the emergency department will provide a better experience for patients arriving at the hospital in an emergency situation, allowing for privacy and direct access to the department during an already stressful and vulnerable time,” says Barrett.
A tour was held on Nov. 15 for SBGHC Board Members, Grey County EMS as well as municipal and provincial partners to celebrate the opening.
Foundation Chair and President Raj Rajput says they are grateful to the Canadian Medical Association Foundation and FCC-AgriSpirit Fund for their generous grants.
“These funders significantly helped ensure the completion of this project to enhance patient flow, ensure patient privacy and meet community health care needs into the future,” says Rajput.
