Ontario Sire Stakes Release
Pepsi North America Cup champion Desperate Man capped off his three-year-old season with a victory in the $225,000 three-year-old pacing colt Super Final at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Oct. 16.
In rein to Trevor Henry, Desperate Man got away second last in the field of six and watched Powertrain pace by the quarter in :27.4. As Powertrain swept by the :55 half, Henry had Desperate Man on the move up the outer lane and the pair was threatening as the pacesetter hit the three-quarters in 1:22.1. As he has throughout his career, Desperate Man kicked into a bigger gear in the stretch and sprinted under the wire one and one-quarter length ahead of favourite Bulldog Hanover to halt the teletimer at 1:49.3. Powertrain held on for third. All three colts are by sire Shadow Play.
“We were, I wouldn’t say we were confident, because we are never overly confident, but we thought we were coming in as ready as he could be,” said trainer Kathy Cecchin. “We were really pleased with his race last week (Oct. 9) and we felt that he was in a good spot.”
The Arthur resident shares ownership of Desperate Man with her husband John Cecchin and daughter and son-in-law Nicole and Paul Davies, also of Arthur, ON. The Davies’ share in the gelding was a wedding gift in the fall of 2019, just after Desperate Man was purchased for $20,000 from the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.
Saturday’s win bumped Desperate Man’s career record to six wins, four seconds and three thirds for earnings of $986,266. In addition to the Super Final and North America Cup, the gelding also captured a Gold Series Leg at Georgian Downs this summer.
“It’s a cliché, but obviously it’s felt like a dream. We still can’t believe this is happening to us and that we have him. It seems like some sort of altered reality or something,” said Cecchin, with a laugh. “When he’s come through, when there’s been so many people there, it’s been incredible. It’s been unbelievable and incredible and we are thankful. And those horses that we have raced against for two years now, we think the world of them too. They’re great competitors and we have the utmost respect for them.”
Driver James MacDonald captured a trio of Super Finals on Saturday night, the second one coming with two-year-old trotting filly Adare Castle. The Guelph resident tucked Adare Castle behind rival Mischevious Rose as that filly powered up the outer lane, and then tipped the fan favourite out at the top of the stretch. With a clear path to the wire, Adare Castle shifted into high gear and drew away to a commanding six length victory in 1:56.3. Mischevious Rose settled for second and Needa Little Magic closed for third.
“As soon as he got Bobby (McClure with Mischevious Rose) to commit, and come out with cover, I was pretty confident, because that’s the kind of trip she loves,” said trainer Mark Etsell, a native of Hanover, ON. “She likes following and coming off a helmet and she’ll give you a pretty good kick, which she showed there tonight. Now a lot of starts she’s been on front early and they’ve come to her, but that’s the trip she really likes, the one she got tonight. Couldn’t have ordered a better trip, James drove her perfect.
“This year has been a really good year, we’re really grateful.”
A four-time winner through the regular season, Adare Castle earned $486,037 for owner/trainer Etsell of Rockwood and his partners Robert Newton of Walkerton, Graham Hopkins of Chesley and Peter Porter of Port Dover, ON. In addition to her Gold Series success, the Muscle Mass daughter was also victorious in her Champlain Stakes division and Peaceful Way elimination.
Both Desperate Man and Adare Castle are now scheduled for a well-deserved vacation before beginning preparations for their four and three-year-old seasons, respectively.
