Cenotaph Park at 618 Mill Street in Port Elgin, could become off-limits to dogs in the near future.
Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole, along with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 340 have had it with irresponsible dog owners not picking up after their dog while in Cenotaph Park.
The Legion’s Norma Dudgeon made her plea during the Open Forum portion of the August 23rd meeting calling for the park in downtown Port Elgin to be declared a dog-free zone except for those with service dogs.
Dudgeon says the Legion spends quite a bit of time cleaning up dog poop before the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies and that should not be the problem in an area that honours the war dead.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau believes by not picking up after a dog in that area, “is an act of mischief and vandalism,” and should be punished under the Criminal Code.
Councillor Dave Myette says it’s unfortunate that it has come to this because of a “few lazy people who are not doing the right thing.”
All of council supported staff coming back with a potential amendment to the bylaw that would make the park a dog-free area.
