The Toronto Blue Jays world was rocked last week with the revelation that the TV voices would also be the radio voices for the network.
Rogers Communications stated ” In an effort to minimize travel and closely adhere to team, league, and government protocols related to the pandemic, Sportsnet will be streamlining production for the 2021 season by simulcasting TV broadcasts on Sportsnet 590 The FAN and across the Sportsnet Radio Network. ”
Naturally, Rogers was vilified on a number of levels and for the most part, deservedly so.
There is an affinity for baseball on radio, in fact, there are many who believe baseball is best on radio, and radio is best with an announcer who’s as much a companion as a broadcaster whether we’re talking sports or otherwise.
I have no doubt, the surviving voices will do the job and do it well for the Blue Jays. Dan Shulman, in my view, is great, end of sentence….
Buck Martinez has a lengthy tenure with the organization and is extremely qualified to be in that position.
Truthfully, if I was the cost conscious, and suddenly health conscious, Rogers Communications, I’d have Shulman & Martinez split the duties, Shulman doing innings 1-3 & 7-9 on TV, Martinez bookending on radio and sandwiched in the middle of TV.
Yes, there is a lament for the days of a Tom Cheek and a Jerry Howarth as the Blue Jays radio voices, and I understand that longing, but there are 2 very distinct issues that we’ll talk about some other day.
