Hi, this is Fred Wallace ” Off the Wire ”
Almost a 10 years later the Owen Sound Attack & the St John Sea Dogs will hook up again.
Their last meeting was May 23, 2011 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga; Game 4 of the 2011 Memorial Cup Round Robin.
The Attack, who were playing without their top player, the injured Joey Hishon, had a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Matt Petgrave and Andrew Shaw.
The Sea Dogs would get on the board late in the 2nd period on a power play goal by Russian import Stanislav Galiev who would go on to play 26 NHL games for the Washington Capitals.
The common belief in those days was that Galiev had commanded a hefty fee to be selected in the CHL Import Draft.
The Galiev goal was assisted by Tomas Jurco
With just over 3 minutes remaining, Jurco, a Slovakian import who would go on to play more than 200 games in the NHL, tied the score with some nifty puck handling around the Owen Sound crease.
Then in overtime, after underage Gemel Smith narrowly missed winning it for Owen Sound, Jonathan Huberdeau, the # 3 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft who’s played more than 500 games in the NHL and scored almost 150 career NHL goals, won it on a lightning quick sequence which put the Sea Dogs into the final and to a large extent finished the tournament for the Attack.
Otherwise, I’ve forgotten that game………
And that’s why I’m rooting for Sam Sedley tomorrow.
Sam is the Attack representative in the E-Memorial Cup and his first round opponent tomorrow is Riley Bezeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs.
That head-to-head is one of the last of the 32 first round matchups in the e-sport event where the winner will get $ 1,000 for the charity of their choice.
Sam Sedley and the Attack might not win the E-Memorial Cup, but the chance to avenge a difficult defeat almost a decade ago in any form of competition is on the line tomorrow and should be solid motivation for the Attack defender.
