Northern Bruce Peninsula Bridge
Northern Bruce Peninsula is going to consider authorizing price negotiations to replace three local bridges.
This comes after council received a structure inspection report in March, where it recommended replacing the Spring Creek Bridge, Heron Point Bridge and the Cherry Hill Road Bridge, costing $1.9 million.
Northern Mat and Bridge presented a cost-effective way to replace these bridges using their modular system as opposed to the standard bridge building process.
Public Works Manager Tory Cameron says in a report, “One of the advantages of using a modular bridge design is that a structure can be replaced in one to two weeks instead of the five to eight weeks for bridge constructed using conventional methods.”
Both the Cherry Hill Road Bridge and Spring Creek Bridge have been found to be in poor condition and are recommended to be replaced within a year at an estimated cost of $625,000 each.
Heron Point Road Bridge, is also listed in poor condition and should be replaced within a year, but at a higher cost of $725,000.
“Staff would like to get council approval to negotiate with Northern Mat and Bridge to get the best pricing for the municipality. Staff would prefer to have Northern Mat and Bridge to be the General Contractor and complete the design, supply and build the structures,” says Cameron in the report.
When staff have negotiated the details and confirmed the cost for each structure, a report will be brought back to council.
Staff is recommending the municipality complete the Spring Creek and Cherry Road Bridge replacements this year, and if the municipality is satisfied with the results, they will move on to Heron Point Road Bridge later in the year or early 2026.
Council will consider approving authorizing price negotiations during its meeting on Monday at 1 p.
