Owen Sound Police is taking applications for its annual Youth in Policing program this summer.
Community Service Officer Jason Cranny says Owen Sound Police have been involved in the province-wide program for a number of years, which has been very successful.
“The program includes an opportunity for young people to actually come and work for the Owen Sound Police and get an inside look as to what we do here at the Owen Sound Police Service. It also builds a skill set for young people to go out and work with the public, more specifically with youth to talk about areas of safety, bike safety, street safety, online safety,” says Cranny.
He adds the participants in the program also go out with officers and the auxiliary unit to special events to promote Owen Sound Police.
The initiative is an eight week program between July and August and is available for youth between the ages of 14 and 19 who are enrolled in school for the 2024-2025 school year. Applicants also need to be eligible to work in Canada and complete the recruitment and background process.
“I probably think this is the best opportunity for a young person to get a first hand look. If it is a career that you are thinking of in communications or in law enforcement or law in general, it certainly would be a great avenue to explore for any young person,” says Cranny.
Students interested in signing up for one of the four available spots are advised to submit their resume and cover letter no later than April 25.
