Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen says some areas of the municipality got hit hard during the ice storm over the weekend.
McQueen says his hydro went out late Saturday afternoon and constantly heard the banging of falling ice covered tree branches as well as saw how the ice buildup impacted hydro lines.
“All the power lines were just hanging so low and I guess sometime in the night, it must have let go and it snapped all the hydro poles,” says McQueen. “On Grey Road 31…I counted 16 hydro poles that were snapped.”
Grey Highlands was one of the many communities across Grey Bruce hit over the weekend by the ice storm, which continues to leave thousands without power until the estimated Wednesday evening restoration date.
“We probably had an accumulation of close to an inch of ice,” says McQueen.
He adds as a result of the more mild temperatures on Sunday, most of the ice had melted.
“I ran into Hydro One, they were cleaning up some of the lines (Sunday) off the road,” says McQueen. “Grey Highlands crews are out and probably Grey County crews as well.”
He adds cleaning and restoration efforts will take a couple of weeks.
McQueen is not sure if he will declare an emergency as of yet, but plans to follow up on the situation.
