The City of Orillia is preparing for forecasted weekend ice storm and asking residents to do the same.
According to an Envioronment Canada Special Weather Statement, the region should prepare for significant ice accretion from freezing rain starting tomorrow night…and lasting through Monday.
The storm is expected to bring prolonged periods of freezing rain over the weekend with the potential for power outages, resulting in hazardous road conditions and increased property risks.
The City, among other things, is pre-treating roads and has emergency equipment on stand-by.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Charge phones and devices in advance of the storm
- Ensure battery backups for sump pumps are working
- Have extra gasoline available for portable generators (do not run portable generators inside or near open doors and windows)
- Fill up vehicles
- Have cash on hand
- Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit with flashlights, food, water, medications, and blankets. To get a detailed list of what should be included in your emergency kit, visit ontario.ca/BePrepared
- Secure or bring in outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage bins
- Avoid unnecessary travel throughout the weekend
The City will provide updates on service impacts as a result of the storm, including recreation programs, facility operations, winter operations, transit services, and other municipal services, through its website at orillia.ca and social media channels as more information becomes available. Residents are encouraged to check ahead before visiting a City facility this weekend.
