The Attack did their part.
Landen Hookey scored the go-ahead goal that stood as the game-winner on the power play with 2:35 to go in the third, as the Owen Sound Attack beat the Guelph Storm 4-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Masen Wray, Cole Zurawski and Bruce McDonald also scored for the Attack (26-35-4-3), which guaranteed itself at least a tiebreaker game on Tuesday — depending on the result between the Sarnia Sting and Soo Greyhounds on Sunday, the final day of the OHL regular season.
The Attack are, for the moment, two points up on Sarnia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Sarnia must beat Soo Sunday to force a tiebreaker game Tuesday in Owen Sound. If Soo wins, the Attack clinch eighth and will face the London Knights in the first round of the OHL Playoffs.
Buckle up.
Jett Luchanko and Max Namestnikov scored the goals for Guelph (20-38-5-4), which had a would-be go ahead goal overturned by video review in the third period. It was ruled the puck was deflected in by a high stick.
The game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, then Wray scored 4:57 into the third to put the Attack up 2-1. Luchanko tied it with just over five minutes to go. The next moments were the nervous ones for the Bayshore faithful, stunned as it looked like Guelph had taken a 3-2 lead — until review brought the goal off the board.
Then a holding call against Quinn Beauchesne sent the Attack to a late power play, and Hookey found a rebound and put it home. McDonald added an empty-netter.
Carter George made 26 saves in the win, while Zach Jovanovski stopped 26 taking the loss. The Attack outshot Guelph 30-28 while going 1 for 5 on the power play; the Storm finished 1 for 2.
