Goderich Council put forward a notice of motion regarding tariffs from the United States.
The notice, which was read by Deputy Mayor Leah Noel, mentioned the concern surrounding talk from the Trump Administration entailing a 25% tariff added to Canadian goods, in addition to rhetoric from the American President about annexing Canada to become the “51st State.”
The document that was presented stated that unjustified tariffs were harmful to both the Canadian and American economies, and that talk of a proposed annexation would be a threat to Canada’s sovereignty and international co-operation.
“Be it resolved that the Town of Goderich condemns divisive and harmful rhetoric regarding the potential annexation of Canada, and categorically rejects trade tariffs imposed by President Trump,” Noel read from the motion.
The motion also has a resolution to send a letter to municipal and business leaders expressing concerns, and advocating for the return of a constructive and positive relationship between Canada and the United States, as well as calling on other municipalities to adopt similar resolutions.
The motion was accepted by council and will be discussed at the regular council meeting on March 17th.
