There’s a plan to build a new hotel in Owen Sound’s east end.
City council reviewed a technical report at Monday’s meeting concerning a zoning by-law amendment application for a new 120-room, six-storey hotel at 1750 16th Avenue East — right near Heritage Place Mall.
It would be a Hampton Inn branded hotel.
“The builder will provide a sidewalk along 16th Avenue East for the property, as well as landscaping and electric vehicle charging stations,” Owen Sound’s Manager of Planning and Heritage Sabine Robart told councillors.
Several city councillors offered supportive comments about the hotel proposal.
“I think this is a great development, much needed,” says Coun. Melanie Middlebro’. “It opens up Owen Sound to being a host to so many more different events, like big sporting events and things we can’t even put ourselves forward for because we don’t have the room for them.”
Deputy Mayor Scott Greig: “Just recently I heard it expressed to me, someone who was very pleased about a similar build in Orangeville,” Greig says. “And they commented about how good it looked as they were driving by.”
The hotel proposal remains in the site plan approval process. A recommendation report is expected to be brought to council at its meeting on Feb. 24.
