The Bruce County Public Library Branch in Port Elgin is celebrating Black History Month with a special event.
The library says it will be showing the short documentary Patty vs. Patty, which won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Short Documentary in 2023.
The film explores the story of the 1985 Toronto Patty Wars when Canadian federal food inspectors deemed Jamaican beef patties were illegally named and threatened vendors with fines up to $5,000. The vendors refused and kept the name of the Jamaican snack.
The free event will be held at the library on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. It will begin with opening remarks and following the film, its director Chris Strikes will join virtually for a live Q&A session.
Additionally, the event will feature a patty tasting session.
Library Director Brooke McLean says, “This event is a wonderful way to bring history to life for our community, and a chance to reflect on a cultural story while savouring a piece of that history with delicious patties.”
