Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be stepping down.
Trudeau announced in Ottawa this morning he “intends to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process.”
He also confirmed he spoke to the Governor General and she granted a request to prorogue parliament until March 24, 2025.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the next option in that election,” Trudeau says.
Reactions have started to come in following the resignation announcement from Trudeau.
Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, whose party has propped up the minority government, says the Liberals have let down Canadians, stating, “It is clear they’ve walked away now. It does not matter who is chosen as the next Liberal leader. They have let you down. They do not deserve another chance, so as soon as there is a confidence vote New Democrats will be voting against the government.”
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said in a recorded video posted to social media today, his view is every Liberal MP and leadership contender supported everything Trudeau did for 9 years. He claims they they want to trick voters by swapping in another liberal face.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the federal government needs to stay focused on the incoming tariffs. Ford says “Canada needs to demonstrate stability and strength at this critical moment.”
He added that the federal government needs to “explain to Canadians how they will avoid tariffs that could have devastating effects on our economy.”
Meanwhile, south of the border both incoming President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have had a few choice words for the news.
Trump says many Canadians would love for the country to become the 51st state of the USA.
On his Truth Social account Trump said “Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.
X owner and Tesla CEO Musk chimed in by replying to a separate post by saying “2025 is looking good”.
