Saugeen Shores has a new Deputy Chief of Police.
Chief of Police Kevin Zettel and the Saugeen Shores Police Service Board, have announced the promotion of Jeremy Mighton to the position.
A statement from police on social media says, “Deputy Chief Mighton previously held the rank of Inspector within the police service. He possesses extensive investigative and administrative expertise, having worked at various levels within the organization, with a particular focus on criminal investigations.”
Mighton began his duties on December 29th, 2024 and says in a statement, “I am honoured to have been given this opportunity, and look forward to continuing to work with the members of the Saugeen Shores Police Service and the community of Saugeen Shores. I am committed to progressive leadership, continued learning and operational excellence, and am ready for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”
A release from police says, in April 2024, Mighton received Canada’s Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of his 21 year career in law enforcement. He began his career with the Guelph Police Service and continued with five years service as a Hanover Police constable before he joined the Saugeen Shores Police Service in 2011.
He was promoted to sergeant in 2016 and to inspector in 2021.
In addition to his graduation from the Ontario Police College, Inspector Mighton has achieved an honours Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from Western University and a Funeral Service Diploma from Humber College.
The release from police says Mighton and his family have lived in Grey Bruce for over 40 years where he has enjoyed coaching and playing various sports, playing guitar and outdoor adventures of many kinds.
Police Board Chair and Deputy Mayor, Diane Huber says in a statement,“His background in uniformed patrol and community policing as well as extensive experience in major crime investigations matched with his commitment to public safety within Saugeen Shores and the dedication he shows toward frontline officers, civilian staff, and community and regional policing partners will very significantly enhance the Senior Officer ranks of the SSPS.”
Police Chief Kevin Zettel adds, “I am excited that the Saugeen Shores Police Service Board has taken the lead to appoint, from within our ranks, Jeremy Mighton as the Deputy Chief of Police. This is an important step forward in our commitment to enhancing the safety, trust, and well-being of our community. This new leadership role will play a vital part as we navigate the evolving challenges of modern policing while strengthening community engagement, training, and public service.”
The police board is confident, according to Huber, “That Deputy Chief Mighton’s appointment, along with recently signed contract agreements, investments in the health and safety of members, an Inspector appointment in the near future, and revisions to the Police Strategic Plan in 2025, strategically positions the Saugeen Shores Police Service to provide adequate and effective policing as determined by provincial legislation and be appropriately responsive and accountable to the Saugeen Shores community.”
The official swearing-in ceremony for Deputy Chief Mighton will be held on January 29th, 2025 at the Police Station in Port Elgin.
