A former Owen Sound mayor, educator and community leader has passed.
Stew Taylor died Friday at Chapman House after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, he was 77-year-old.
He was an Owen Sound city councillor from 1983 to 1994 and mayor from 1995 to 2001, when he was appointed justice of the peace in August of that year.
He was also a school principal at Sydenham Community School, alderman, and regional senior justice of the west region.
Taylor was also a major Owen Sound Attack fan and a key supporter and negotiator who helped bring OHL hockey to Owen Sound in 1989, when the Platers relocated from Guelph.
His obituary says, “Even as his health failed and he was unable to go to The Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, Stew never missed an Attack game at home or away on TV.”
In keeping with Taylor’s wishes, a cremation has taken place, and family and friends are invited to a come and go visitation in his memory at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home in Owen Sound on Dec. 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
