Joel Loughead will be the Green Party candidate for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound in the next Ontario election.
The Grey Highlands councillor won the nomination at a Green Party riding association meeting at the Harmony Centre in Owen Sound Monday evening.
An email from the Green Party of Ontario says Loughead is running to protect his community’s green spaces, sensitive watersheds and world-class farmland from urban sprawl.
“I’m running because I believe in a government that puts people before profits and stands up for the people and places we love,” says Loughead in a prepared statement.
Bayshore Broadcasting News has reached out to Loughead for an interview, and will update this story after receiving a response.
Ontario Green Party Leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner was on hand in Owen Sound for the nomination meeting.
“Joel is a local champion who will be your voice at Queen’s Park,” says Schreiner. “He’s not working for a political party – he’s working for you, and I know his energy and drive will get more done for the people of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.”
The province’s next election doesn’t have to be held until June 4, 2026, but political parties have been nominating candidates amid speculation Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government could send Ontarians to the polls sometime in 2025.
Loughead was one of two candidates who sought the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Green nomination; the other was Natasha Akiwenzie.
