The former Colonel Clarke’s Tavern in Northern Bruce Peninsula has been destroyed in a fire.
Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt says around 11 p.m. Friday night, the Lion’s Head, Tobermory and Wiarton Fire Departments responded to a call about a blaze at the popular tavern.
“The damage was a total loss. When we arrived on scene the fire had already consumed most of the building,” says Burt. “A passer by had called it in when they saw smoke and flame coming out of the building and the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.”
He says the total damage is estimated around $1.5 million.
No one was injured and Burt says the cause is still under investigation, but is currently not deemed suspicious.
He says the 27 firefighters battling the blaze were on the scene for about 11 hours.
