Alpha Street is set to fully re-open next week.
Owen Sound City Manager Tim Simmonds told councillors at Monday’s meeting some asphalt resurfacing, line painting and other finishing touches on the $5.25-million reconstruction project are being completed this week, and then Alpha Street will re-open to traffic next Monday, Nov. 25.
The street has been closed between 6th and 9th Avenues West since May.
The Alpha Street reconstruction project included the replacement of underground municipal infrastructure, as well as construction of a new active transportation route on the east side of the road and some landscaping.
Simmonds says three new accessible rest points were also installed along the Alpha Street hill.
“They’re really nice bench areas that are totally accessible, by wheelchair and other things,” Simmonds explains. “And they’re for people to navigate the incline there.”
Simmonds says the project is wrapping up “four-to-five months ahead of schedule” and is also under budget.
“We anticipate that the project should be under budget in the range of $150,000-$250,000,” Owen Sound’s city manager says in a email.
He adds public transit that has been detoured by the Alpha Street closure will return to original routes and service by Dec. 2.
