The Ottawa 67’s power play finally broke through when it mattered.
Brady Stonehouse scored a one-time shot on the power play with 4:41 remaining in the third period, breaking a 3-3 tie as the 67’s went on to beat the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at TD Place.
Ottawa’s power play was 0 for 5 to that point. The Attack penalty-kill even foiled a 1:57 two-man advantage earlier in the game.
But the power play clicked when the 67’s needed it.
Henry Mews also scored twice for Ottawa (8-7-2-2) and finished with four points. Cooper Foster had the other 67’s goal.
Jake Crawford, Sam McCue and Ethan Kindree scored for the Attack (6-11-2-2), who ended up going 1-2 on their Eastern trip through Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa.
Kindree’s goal was his first in the OHL, and a big one for the Attack. They trailed 3-2 heading into the third period. Then Ben Cormier skated up the right wing and put a pass out front of the net, where Kindree managed to get a contested shot off towards goal and beat Collin MacKenzie 5:36 into the third to tie the game 3-3.
Stonehouse’s game-winner came 18 seconds into a power play opportunity after Pierce Mbuyi was sent off for hooking.
The Attack led early in the game. Crawford scored 1:25 in, converting a 2-on-1 opportunity. McCue had it on the right side and got a pass to a wide open Crawford in front. He deked to his backhand and put it past MacKenzie to make it 1-0. That was Crawford’s first goal since Oct. 9 against London.
Ottawa would tie the game at 14:01 of the first period. Just after a power play had ended, Luca Pinelli feathered a pass across the zone to Mews at the right faceoff dot. He put a wrist shot past Carter George blocker side to make it 1-1.
The Attack would answer less than two minutes later. Just after they had a power play end, McCue picked up a loose puck in the crease and poked it behind MacKenzie to make it 2-1.
Ottawa’s power play was 0 for 4 in the first period.
The 67’s would take their first lead in the second. Mews tied it 4:27 into the period with his second goal of the game. And then with 1:47 left in the middle frame, Mews again took a shot from the right point that found its way through traffic and past George. 3-2 Ottawa. It looked for a moment that the 67’s defenceman and Calgary Flames prospect had a hat trick. But the goal was later corrected to Foster, who must have tipped the puck in front of George.
MacKenzie made 28 saves in the win, while George stopped 20 taking the loss. The Attack outshot the 67’s 31-24 while going 0 for 3 on the power play; Ottawa finished 1 for 6.
Next up for Owen Sound is a road game against the London Knights (15-4) on Friday, Nov. 22. You can hear all the action live on Kia of Owen Sound-Terry’s Trailer Service Bear Radio.
