Some new lighting is going to be installed in a couple of downtown Owen Sound walkways.
Council approved Monday to move ahead with agreements with a few private parties to allow for new catenary lighting in Carney’s Lane and Artists’ Alley.
Carney’s Lane is a popular walkway known for it’s large Owen Sound mural. It’s located beside Rexall, and connects 2nd Avenue East to a public parking lot off 3rd Avenue East. Artists’ Alley is another path between buildings, just north of Carney’s Lane.
“This may seem like a simple thing, but I think the impact is significant. We know that well lit streets aren’t just functional, they create a sense of safety and welcome for everyone who talks them,” says Owen Sound Coun. Brock Hamley. “Carney’s Lane is a key route from main parking areas to the heart of the River District; And right now it lacks the visibility need to feel safe and inviting, especially during darker months.”
“Adding these lights will improve safety, and encourage more foot traffic,” Hamley adds.
The River District Board has approved spending $15,000 for the new lighting.
