A new natural space is being unveiled at the Beaver Valley Community School (BVCS) in Thornbury.
The Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) says on Oct. 10 students and staff were joined by parents and guardians, as well as volunteers, donating businesses, and a representative of Tree Canada for the launch of the Backyard Habitat Project.
The project was spearheaded by volunteer Arnis Pukitis and Grade Two Teacher Audrey Macdonald, and with support from a $9,500 grant received earlier this year from Tree Canada, they were able to plant seven trees and 48 native shrubs benefiting insects and birds.
Planting beds and the large trees were installed over the summer.
“The initiative at BVCS marks a logical next step to build upon the Butterfly Gardens project completed in 2023. With that project, funding support was provided by the School Council to make the schoolyard more attractive to local wildlife, including five local butterfly species. Primary classes prepared flower beds and planted over 200 native wildflowers, which they continue to maintain,” says the board.
Additionally, last month, six classes of over 100 students started the planting process and also watered the planted trees.
“There is already a full slate of additional components for students to action in the future as the new space grows and evolves. These include bird feeders, baths, and boxes, and even an insect hotel,” says the board.
The BWDSB says in addition to supporting the local ecosystem, the new natural space contributes to the curriculum and learning opportunities for students.
