Revised plans for High Street and the cenotaph in Southampton are expected to come to Saugeen Shores council in late November.
Comments on the proposed project from Saugeen Shores residents were shared at council’s October 28th meeting.
A public meeting was held in July where about 90 people shared their thoughts, on the proposed High Street reconstruction and also on potential changes to the cenotaph. There were some opportunities for online input as well.
Staff and consultants RJ Burnside complied comments from residents and shared the results.
A staff report says “There is a strong message from the community that the opportunities for parking on High Street are already limited and design changes need to be made to mitigate the loss of parking spaces.”
The initial plan had proposed a reduction of spaces, and some repurposing of spaces.
Staff and consultants also say, “There is a strong message to retain the Cenotaph features in their present form and composition with refurbishment and updates to the plaque contents. Burnside sent a structural engineer to review and assess the conditions of the cairn and cross and reported back that the cairn appears to be stable and may require some repair and maintenance.”
A presentation will be made to the Southampton BIA at their Annual General Meeting on November 5th and then the aim is to present a final design to council November 25th.
