A new nature documentary featuring the aquatic wildlife along the Bruce Peninsula is premiering this weekend.
You may remember Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick of Inspired Planet Productions for their discovery of the Africa shipwreck Lake Huron last year. They found the ship while working on their new film All Too Clear.
Director Zach Melnick says the film brings attention to the ecosystems in the great lakes, “For the past three years, we have been working on a documentary project which documents the impact invasive mussels have been having throughout the great lakes,” says Melnick.
He says the film uses underwater drones to explore how quadrillions of invasive mussels have fundamentally changed the waters.
“We spent time in all of the great lakes looking beneath the surface and what these mussels have done, but we also spend time there down under the water with species that people are familiar with. We spent time with the whitefish especially, one of our key species,” says Melnick.
As Bruce Peninsula residents for nine years, Melnick and Drebert have used the area as a base to capture film for the documentary.
“While we spent 150 days filming under waves of great lakes, a good chunk of that has been right around Bruce, so Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. We have been able to go to the deepest part of Georgian Bay for instance and show people what is living down there,” says Melnick.
He adds part of the film with also feature the 128-year-old shipwreck Africa.
The film will be shown on Saturday on TVO at 7 p.m.
