Bruce Power is unveiling a new brigade building for its firefighters.
Director of Community and Media Relations and Economic Development John Peevers says they officially opened the new facility on Oct. 3.
“It was a building previously used for another purpose. Our fire team had been working out of another building they shared with a central maintenance facility. Just a dedicated facility with better amenities for our firefighters so they have all the tools they need to do their very important job here at Bruce Power,” says Peevers.
He says the facility features updated office and work space, a larger garage, and workout area for a crew he described would similar to that employed by a small city.
“We are, as a site, self contained, so we have all the amenities that a small city would have. We have five crews of firefighters so that we got 24/7 coverage,” says Peevers.
He adds as an energy company, a fire is something they take very seriously.
“Fire is one of the largest threats that we have,” says Peevers. “When we look at the various hazards that can impact our operations, fire is one of the most serious ones and we do a lot of training and prep to make sure it doesn’t impact our operations.”
Peevers says similar to other fire departments, the Bruce Power crew also assists other departments in battling blazes they get called to.
“We have some specialized equipment that does come in handy like truck ability to refill breathing apparatus for firefighters,” says Peevers. “We have a really unique and state-of-the-art fire training facility on-site that we offer up to local fire services as well.”
