Wednesday is the deadline for a survey on plans to make changes to Southampton’s High Street.
Changes have been in discussion since at least 2021, when the Business Improvement Area budgeted $20,000 for a consultant to do a streetscape study.
More recently, in 2023, the Town also hired consultants to do a parking study.
Now, consultants are proposing taking away about 24 parking spots and adding 12 scooter or motorcycle spots, and also adding loading zones and some bump-outs which are intended to make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street.
It would also include a reduced speed limit to 30 km/h and four-way stops at all intersections.
The design proposes there be raised centre islands in the street as well as more shade trees.
The Town’s survey also asks about plans to refurbish the cenotaph which sits in the middle of High Street.
The work would also involve sewer repairs, traffic calming adjustments and considerations for cyclists and pedestrians.
It also proposes putting four way stops at all the intersections on High Street west of Highway 21 (Albert Street) and a crosswalk.
Presently, there are 207 spaces on High Street with about 80 per cent of them in use on the days the parking study was conducted. Consultants from Paradigm conducted parking surveys on a single weekday and a Saturday in August 2023.
You can find the survey until September 4th as well as a project overview with past reports, delegations and documents on the Town of Saugeen Shores website.
