Bruce Power is looking to hear from the community on its proposed Bruce C expansion project.
Director of Community and Media Relations and Economic Development John Peevers says a 30-day comment period is now open with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) after the energy company submitted its Initial Project Description to the federal body.
“Just like it sounds, it explains the project that we are proposing. It is a 122 page document and it is now posted through the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada website, so the public can now see what we are proposing,” says Peevers.
The project aims to add up to 4,800 megawatts of electricity production at the Bruce Power site. A full description of the project can be found on the company’s website here.
Peevers says following the comment period, the IAAC will collect the results and Bruce Power will review the comments and concerns raised, adjusting the project if needed.
“We started the engagement with Indigenous communities, with the public, with municipalities, that is really the key part of the project for us. This sort of formalizes things and gives people that official opportunity to voice their opinions on things and it is exciting for us because we are taking that next step forward in planning for the Bruce C project,” says Peevers.
He says it is still too early to determine a timeline for the project, as it still could take years.
“The impact assessment process can take anywhere from three to four years which is why we wanted to get going on it soon,” says Peevers.
The first comment period is set to wrap up on Sept. 12 and those who wish to take part can visit the IAAC website here.
