Local seniors are going for gold as the Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home hosts its own Olympic games.
Life Enrichment Manager Vicki Caudle says they launched their version of the Olympic games at the Lion’s Head facility last week after proposing the idea for activities for their residents.
“It made me think why don’t we give the Olympics a try and so when I mentioned it to the staff, they were on board right away and the ideas just started flowing,” says Caudle.
She says all of the 37 residents at the home are participating in the various events, which include air hockey, a fishing derby, target shooting, and beanbag toss.
“We have a wide range of cognitive and physical disabilities, so we are trying to balance out the teams. There are four teams and everyone in the home is on a team and some of the residents are very keen,” says Caudle.
They plan to hold an award ceremony for everyone who participated in the games on Aug. 21, where everyone will receive a gold medal and the winning team will receive a trophy.
“We have people that really enjoy hockey and baseball so I thought it would be kind of fun to try and make something a little different than what we normally do in our programming and try to make it parallel with the Olympics that are going on right now,” says Caudle.
