Construction will get underway this week on the next phase of Owen Sound’s downtown river precinct project.
The $2-million revamp of the 900 block of 1st Avenue East — from near the Sydenham condo building to 10th Street — will include a new riverside boardwalk, paths, trees and “enhancements to business opportunities such as patios.”
“The space will be able to change for different events and programs in the River District,” a statement from the city explains. “The project will also improve accessibility and public safety through design, lighting, and programming. Future phases will include water access landings for short-term boat docking.”
It’s expected the work will wrap up by September.
The 900 block of 1st Avenue East will be closed to through access during the construction period. City staff say shops and businesses in the area will remain accessible, and pedestration access will “remain as much as possible.”
The first phase of Owen Sound’s downtown river precinct project — a $3-million refresh of 1st Avenue West which include a new pavillion for the Farmer’s Market — was completed in 2019.
